3D Modeling Tips

Connect All Objects

The most common problem seen with student projects is a failure to fully jam every part together into one object.  When adding text or other decorative items, it is critical to nudge them all the way “into” objects next to them.

You cannot leave text floating even a teeny tiny bit above the object on which it should appear.

Things may appear connected from one angle but when zooming in and rotating the view you can see gaps when there is a problem.

Unreasonable Overhangs

We try to print everything we can with no supports.  This means 90 degree overhangs such as vertical text on the side of an object must be minimized to about 1mm or eliminated.

In many cases, a better outcome is achieved by splitting a model into parts, each of which can be printed with no overhangs, and glueing or bolting them together after printing.
